Curacao
Having taken a hiatus from travel during the core of baseball season, I’ve found myself booking several future trips over the last few weeks as baseball season comes to a close – even if the travel dates are way off into the future. I booked my annual ski trip and a Spring 2014 trip the Curacao.
Having lived in the Netherlands for several years, it will always be one of my favorite countries and cultures. While living in the Netherlands I met many from Suriname and the Dutch Antilles and have always wanted to visit. The Dutch Antilles are of course no longer the Dutch Antilles. Aruba seceded in 1986 and on October 10th, 2010 (10/10/10), Curacao and Sint Maarten become likewise constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba remained part of the country of the Netherlands (Caribbean Netherlands).
Here’s a tentative list of things I want to see/do while there:
- Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue and Jewish Cultural Historical Museum
- Kura Hulanda Museum
- Beaches (of course): Playa Lagun (less crowded beach), Playa Porto Marie (crowded but good reef for snorkeling), Blauwbaai (snorkeling beach), Kenepa Beach, Knip Bay, Playa Canoa (place to surf in Curacao)
- Postal Museum (maybe)
- Christoffel National Park (also visit Shete Boka National Park)
- Klein Curacao
- Punda – floating market
- Old fort by Riffort Village
- Hato Caves and Ostrich farm
- Fort Amsterdam
- Handelskade, Willemstad
